Newark and Sherwood Policing Inspector

NewarkandSherwood Inspector

My name is Heather Sutton and I am the neighbourhood policing inspector for the Newark and Sherwood area.

I have a broad policing career that gives me a well balanced approach to policing. I have previously worked both on response and neighbourhood departments and have experience as a Neighbourhood Sergeant for two very different areas within Nottingham City.

I have been involved in a number of different projects, translating strategy into operational activity and getting things done. The main ones were around mental health and community resolution.

In 2015, I was seconded to Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (formerly HMIC) where I worked as a specialist staff officer for neighbourhoods, antisocial behaviour and partnership work. I travelled around the country and had the opportunity to review these subjects in different forces. During my time there, I also supported inspections into how the police deal with vulnerable victims and had the opportunity to work with victims directly, hearing first-hand the impact crime and disorder has. I collaboratively wrote and edited the 2015 HMIC review into neighbourhood policing, PEEL: Policing effectiveness 2015- A national overview.

I returned to Nottingham in 2016 and, in response to national concerns, set up the proactive knife crime team under the CID department, helping to protect the public and target some of the most serious and complex offenders.

Following on from my growing interest in knife crime and serious violence, I went on to qualify as a firearms commander and managed the incoming demand on the ‘very front line’ of policing, Contact Management.

I took-up the role of District Commander in October 2018 and am committed to ensuring Newark and Sherwood remains a safe and happy place to live, work and visit.
